Figure 1: Accident during maritime transport of pulp bales due to inadequate cargo securing: the containers stowed on deck were properly secured. The problems arose because the bales were not secured in the containers. The movement of the bales in the containers meant that the normally adequate securing of the containers could no longer withstand the extra stress and the containers „wandered“ over the deck. The photo shows that the ship’s side has been broken through in one place (see arrow). The consequence of this inadequate cargo securing was six deaths and immense material damage.
